please put as much information as you can, thanks! What's the difference in the H1,H2 and H3 versions of hummer?Only the H1 is a true Hummer in the sense of the military vehicle. The H2 and H3 are basically rebodied full- and midsized, respectively, GM light trucks.
What is known as the H1 is a military vehicle that was designed specifically for a US government contract by a company called AM General, which is the government contract branch of American Motors Corporation; from which Chrysler bought the rights to the civilian Jeep in 1987(the other most commonly known product of AM General was the DJ or Dispatcher Jeep, otherwise known as the Postal Jeep). The H1 is the only "Hummer" ever built by AM General, and ALL H1s are built by AM General; even the few sold by GM.
After the military HMMWV, High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, nicknamed "Humvee" and then "Hummer" by soldiers, had been produced for a couple of years, AM General began equipping a limited number of them for civilian sales, which basically meant adding side impact beams in the doors and a few other required additions to meet DOT regulations. Otherwise they were identical to the military version, with the non-turbo 6.2l GM diesel engine, 3-speed Turbo 400 automatic transmission and low gearing, which limited the top speed to 70 mph. Most sales went to hardcore offroaders.
After a couple more years, AM General upgraded the civilian version of the Hummer (which was by now the registered name of the civilian sales branch of the company) to the 6.5l turbodiesel, and a different automatic transmission with overdrive. The more powerful engine increased performance on the road, and the overdrive increased top speed and fuel economy while making for a quieter ride at highway speeds.
At this point the civilian Hummer was available in the standard half-cab and station wagon versions for about $60,000; and a stripped-down, single-cab pickup truck version with the original military-type drivetrain was introduced for sale to ranchers and other businesses, for $45,000. This version was called the "Recruit".
That was the status as of 1998, when GM bought the rights to the "Hummer" name. GM stated at the time that they were going to introduce a "more affordable" Hummer. They quietly discontinued the Recruit (which WAS more affordable) without a word, immediately raised the price of the standard Hummer (which they renamed H1) from $60,000 to $100,000, and plopped a vaguely Hummer-looking body on the existing Suburban platform, which they then proceeded to sell for $60,000. This was their idea of making a "more affordable" Hummer!
Later they capitalized on the name even further by making a smaller Hummer body to put on the existing midsize Colorado frame, calling it the H3. The price was approximately $30,000.
The H2 and H3 are basically just a marketing exercise. They do have lockers in the axles and other modifications to make them more offroadable, but a Suburban or Colorado could be easily upgraded with the same parts to make them equally capable, for far less money.
The H1 has never been produced by GM. They did sell a few, but they were still produced by AM General. GM discontinued sales of the H1 in 2006. It is my contention that they intentionally priced it out of the market so they could concentrate on their in-house produced pretenders.
The Humvee, H1, "real" Hummer, in addition to being diesel powered (H2 and H3 are gas only) has a heavy-duty independent suspension front and rear, with mostly interchangeable parts from front to rear. The differential itself is basically the same unit that was in the original Jeep CJ-7, and has a Torsen all-gear limited slip front and rear, with F%26amp;R Detroit lockers being optional. The differentials are 3.54:1, but at the end of each axle is a gearbox that further reduces the ratio by 1.98:1, making the overall ratio just over 7:1. This system is similar to a few other military vehicles, most notably the Mercedes Unimog (although the Unimog has solid axles instead of independent suspension).
The H2 and H3 have the same solid rear axle/independent front as the vehicles they are based on.What's the difference in the H1,H2 and H3 versions of hummer?
the h1 was a hardcore, hard-to use on a normal road military vehicle. then the h2 and h3 are all easier to use versions that are a bit more flash. What's the difference in the H1,H2 and H3 versions of hummer?size and design. think of it like a doberman. you have the original full size, you have a miniurature, and a toy size.
the H1 is the original hummer, all others are minituarized imitations. turbo diesel, locking differential and transfer case, 18" ground clearance, 8' wide, 6-12K lbs depending on set up. it has a completely independent suspension and coil springs on each corner. it has disc brakes on the axles.
the H2 is the miniurature size. it's built of the same frame as a Chevy Tahoe. uses the large V-8 motor that is in them. it's a competent off roader, but not even close to the original. gas hog.
the H3 is the Toy size. it's built of the chevy colorado frame and until recently only used the same powertrain as well. a 5 cyl inline gas. could be backed with either an automatic or manual transmission. now it can be had with a V-8 as well. in correct form it is actually competitive with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon as an offroad vehicle.
the latter two use a solid live axle for the rear and so don't have the same capabilities as the original. What's the difference in the H1,H2 and H3 versions of hummer?
The H1 is the original. the civilian version has a interior unlike the basket seats as the army version. It's diesel powered. lots of torque and low gear ratio's for pulling and off road situations
The H2 is made on the gm 2500 chassis from the suburban and truck. it has a 400 small block gas motor. Not the best combo for that thing.
It was reported to be 85% as good as the h1.
The H3 is a cheesy version based on the GM Colorado pickup. Same frame and in line 5 motor. It is the worst of the three poor gas mileage from a 200 hp in line 5 that's trying to move a 4600 lb truck. Whoever thought that was a good idea at Gm was way off. What's the difference in the H1,H2 and H3 versions of hummer?H1: The basic, straight from the military Hummer. It is the most expensive model, and is also the biggest. They don't actually produce the H1 commercially now, so you can't buy it. For a while, they had the H1 Alpha version, which is the version that is more hardcore.
H2: The Hummer that everyone thinks of when they say "gas guzzler". This Hummer is based off of the same platform in the Chevy Tahoe/Suburban. It weighs a lot, gets relatively low mileage, and is the car Horatio Caine and the CSI Miami crew drive as their company cars.
There is also an H2T, which is the H2, just in a pickup version with a small bed.
H3: The smallest Hummer yet. This Hummer was designed to be smaller and more able to handle city tasks, while being able to off-road well and be rugged. This is the only Hummer some magazines comparison test, for it is the smallest and fits into the small SUV class. There is a pickup version coming, similar to the H2T.
Really, the H3 is not a very good car. Its visibility suffers from the design, it's not that big inside, and is actually pretty unsafe. In the IIHS tests, it got bad ratings that were worse than a Smart Car.
The ride is horrible, it's going to be unreliable, and it gets horrible gas mileage. But at least it's good off road. That's pretty much the only thing it's good at, very similar to the Jeep Wrangler: also very unsafe and only good off road.
Hope this helps!
